Disorders that may affect the bladder
There are various unrelated conditions that can pose a risk of bladder problems. What’s positive about these types of incontinence is that there’s a good chance of getting rid of leaks once you treat the underlying condition. Here are some examples:
- Stroke. Reduced mobility is a common result of a stroke, and this increases the risk of functional urinary incontinence.
- Diabetes. Women with diabetes are more prone to have impaired bladder sensitivity, which can result in overflow urinary incontinence. Diabetes is also connected to very large urine amounts caused by high blood sugar levels. This increases the risk of leaks.
- Obesity can cause incontinence due to abdominal fat putting extra pressure on the pelvic floor and bladder.
- A urinary tract infection with bacteria that irritates the inside of the bladder can cause urgency feelings.
